Week Seven on Keto: Why Month Two Feels Different, and When to Start Cutting Fat

In this recording

A 26-minute Live from February 2020, posted privately inside the group during the "RebootMeKD" program. Some members had started tapering in early December, and the full group had restarted on New Year's Day. This was the middle of week seven. The broadcast ended early when the video feed turned into a pink screen.

Watching this in 2026

The shape of this Live is the shape of how I teach keto. Month one, count carbs only. Let adaptation do the appetite work. When hunger comes down, keep protein where it is, and the thing that comes off the plate is fat (live UIKT6147). I'd said a version of that since 2017. Stop pushing fats once you're adapted (video NUJNFG6lLWw). Don't restrict calories in month one, and look harder if hunger lasts past week six (video 7Aixw4uRksI).

What I like most here is the honesty about who's watching. I said I hesitate to give a single meal plan because I don't have kids, I'm not married, and I'm not living out of a tractor trailer (live UIKT6147). That's still the right instinct. The rules travel. The menu doesn't.

The claim worth unpacking: "fundamentally a calorie-based diet"

I opened by saying keto works the same way all diets do, through calories. Its advantage is that hunger drops, so the calories come down on their own (live UIKT6147). That's the same argument I made in 2017 about adherence (video 9AGpKAfs3Yk). The trials on the ketosis evidence page mostly back the calorie half:

In the Live I also floated the idea that bodies "run cooler" on a high-carb diet (live UIKT6147). The ward studies don't show a large metabolic advantage either way. Where the literature and my argument agree is the practical part: if a diet makes eating less easier, it works better for the person on it.

The mechanism needs a footnote too. The way I put it, insulin binding lipase and ketones being the "constituents of a fat molecule", was a simplification. The ketogenesis reference describes ketone bodies as made in liver mitochondria from fat, with the process regulated by insulin and glucagon (StatPearls, Ketogenesis). The direction I described, less insulin and more fat use, matches that. The detail I gave doesn't. More in insulin and fat storage.

The line that holds up

I described myself as someone on the internet who "points to articles", not a medical professional (live UIKT6147). In the same breath I said to run changes by your doctor, especially if you have any condition. That goes double for anyone on diabetes or blood-pressure medication. When carbs drop, doses can need changing, and that's your doctor's call. See keto with medication.
