Can You Drink Alcohol on Keto? Beer, Liquor, Mixers and Why You'll Feel It Faster

2017-08-04

This is a short, single-question explainer from August 2017, the kind I was making that month so people could post it as a reply in the groups. It never went up on YouTube. Alcohol also gets a short answer in a longer beginner Q&A from the same summer (video xyEZL0HuejI), but this is the only recording where it's the whole topic.

The line that holds up: "why are you asking?"

The most useful moment in this clip isn't the beer list. It's at [2:10], when I turn the question around. "Can I drink on keto?" means two very different things. One person is asking about a glass of wine at a wedding. Another is asking about a nightly habit. The first one doesn't need an answer about carbs at all. The second one does, and the answer is that it won't help.

That's the same idea I kept coming back to that summer: a diet is what you eat over weeks, not one evening. In another video I made the same point about carbs: one higher-carb day won't undo fat adaptation once you're a few weeks in (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). Alcohol fits that frame. One night is a blip. Five nights a week is your diet.

The claim worth a caveat: feeling it faster

The tolerance warning at [3:02] is my own experience plus "numerous stories" I'd heard. It's an anecdote, not a finding. The evidence pages behind this site don't cover alcohol metabolism on a ketogenic diet, so I can't point you to a number here, and I'm not going to make one up. Treat the advice as practical caution: if you drink, assume it'll hit harder than you remember, and plan the ride home before the first drink.

What the evidence pages do cover is blood sugar. Cutting total carbohydrate has the most evidence for improving blood sugar in adults with diabetes or prediabetes (American Diabetes Association, Evert et al., 2019). That's the reason people on diabetes medication need extra care here: lower carbs plus alcohol plus medication is a combination your doctor should know about before you try it, not after.

Then vs now

In the longer Q&A from the same summer, the alcohol answer is the same in a shorter form: light beers and spirits are low carb, heavy beers aren't, and alcohol gets burned before fat (video xyEZL0HuejI). In the MyFitnessPal video I mentioned having about 500 calories of alcohol at a party the day before and still landing well under my calorie budget (video DoSUgIr2rNo), which is the "one night, not a habit" idea in practice. The position didn't change. This clip just has the most detail, especially the tolerance warning and the "what stage are you in" question, which the shorter answers leave out.
